This Week in Review☕️: Top Food Trends this year | Masters dominates Auction Sales | Perishable Items take hit amid record heat wave | THC trauma | Anti transgender legislation in 2021 | Race to Space
Quick Bites :
Sports 🏃♀️: US sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson cannot compete in the Olympics 100m race after testing positive for THC, a chemical in marijuana.
Ok, so let us get this straight.. Elon Musk can smoke a doob on Youtube publicly and SpaceX gets a $3bn contract to to go the moon but Richardson gets banned from the Olympics?
PS. Before anyone asks- yes, Musk is also disqualified from the Olympics.
💡Sha'Carri Richardson's response:
She said she knew the rules but her use of marijuana was only "triggered" as a coping mechanism after finding out her biological mother had died.
So, a flawed, outdated rule has brought the runner more of what she was trying to escape- grief.
“Don’t judge me, because I am human… I just happen to run a little faster.”
Our Thoughts💡: Not sure we want to live in a time where Richardson can't run but Bill Cosby walks.
Also, marijuana is NOT a performance-enhancing drug AND it's legal in her state. She's not on steroids. Nothing to see here folks; let the girl run!
💡Basketball legend Dwyane Wade summed it up perfectly:
"Majority of y'all rule makers smoke and probably are investors in THC companies. Let's stop playing games."
PS. If she's not a pot-brand billionaire by the end of 2021, we're gonna be incredibly disappointed.
Speaking of athletes ️🏋️♀️ : A majority of states including Florida and Ohio want to ban transgender athletes from participating in female sports, USA Today.
This comes after New Zealand Weightlifter 'Laurel Hubbard' became the 1st transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics- and she's 43!
Ban supporters say transgender girls dominated in basketball, softball and track.
Opposition worries about the effect on girls who could be be subject to an "invasive and traumatic experience of genital inspections,"
-Kyle Velte to USA Today, a University of Kansas professor.
No offense but shouldn't sports instead be based on, idk, height? weight? age?
Literally anything else that might make sense?
Gonna put a Lamborghini badge on our Subaru and sell it one of these clowns for 500k
2021 has been a record year for anti-transgender legislation.Over a 100 new bills have been introduced; the highest number since anti-LGBQT legislation began more than 15 years ago.
This is the time states proves they have real skin in the game by actually practicing the inclusivity they preach.
Real support is a serious commitment to action. Don't let the excess of flashy rainbows fool y'all
Our Thoughts💡: To all the people discussing trans athletes at the Olympics:
We are NOT "biological women".
We are NOT a less stronger species of women.
We are NOT a VAGINAL subset of women.
We. Are. Simply. WOMEN.
Food 🍳 : Grocery stores are pulling perishable goods from their shelves amid dangerous heat wave, Business Insider reports.
The record-breaking temperatures have caused several power outages from Washington to California.
This has impacted local businesses as the extreme weather makes it hard for freezers and refrigerators to maintain low temperatures.
Perishable items like milk, meat and eggs are kept in freezers between -20 to -10°C.
Anything lower than that can increase the rate of respiration and the growth of microorganisms, which can spoil some food products.
Ok, now we know why our canned tuna tasted like fishy cardboard this week 🤢
According to Business Insider, people in DC posted pictures of empty aisles wrapped in plastic. Others reported aisles of Gatorade and electrolyte drinks cleared out.
"This is the beginning of a permanent emergency. That is why it is so disturbing"
-Washington Governor. Inslee on the heat wave
Our Thoughts💡: Umm.. Are we the only ones who find it weird that supermarkets have 'open' refrigeration and freezers?!
What about stores leaving lights on all night? And the ultra bright billboards & other excess usage of power?
Engineered almond milk shortages are NOT the answer👋
Speaking of extreme heat🍦: Ice-cream makers are experiencing a surge in demand this summer.
Social media and innovation- in terms of flavors and non-dairy alternatives, have contributed to the growth of of the ice-cream market, which is projected grow 2.83% annually, according to Mordor Intelligence data.
With the new Delta variant still restricting travel, flavors inspired by foreign cuisine have become increasingly popular in 2021.
From Japanese Mochi and Italian Gelato to Turkish Dondurma and Israeli Halva, the variations of ice-cream have become abundant.
Mexican-inspired flavors from Dulce de Leche to Tajin popsicles with a chili-lime tang have, especially, become quite sought-after.
In addition, savory flavors from Olive Oil to Avocado have been all the rage as people try to indulge in the frozen treat without overloading on sugar.
Picasso x Art 🎨 : On 30th June last week, Christie's hosted a 20th/21st Century: London to Paris cross-sale, including salesrooms in Hong Kong and New York.
In terms of auction sales, Pablo Picasso continues to dominate.
The top price of the evening was Picasso’s L’étreinte (1969), which sold for $20.3mn. (shown below)
The painting which depicts the Spanish artist and his third wife in an intimate embrace went to a collector bidding on the phone with Alex Rotter, chairman of 20th/21st century Christie’s worldwide, ARTNews reports.

- VP of Christie's 20th/21st century, Giovanna Bertazzoni said after the sale.
