Quick Bites:
Tech 📱: 'Please come back', Musk takes U-turn after 50% lay off last week. Apparently, some were laid off ‘by mistake’.
Ah yes, who wouldn't want to work for a boss whose so oblivious to your value that he fires you BY ACCIDENT
On top of that, in a fresh blow to free speech, Twitter has permanently banned Kathy Griffin and other comedians for impersonating Elon. Free the bird, MY A** 👋
As questions swirl around how the social platform will operate under its new owner, many large companies have suspended Twitter ads:
💡General Mills
💡CVS
💡United Airlines
💡General Motors
💡Audi
💡Volkswagen
💡Spotify
💡Ford
💡Dyson
💡American Express
💡Coca-Cola
💡Forbes
💡Unilever
💡Johnson & Johnson
There's more💡: Dominoes Pizza, Porsche, Oreo Cookies, Lamborghini, Bentley, Puma, Swarovski, Walt Disney.. the list goes on.
Well, the good news is: Between all these advertisers and the ones we've blocked, we out here in an ad-free Twitter paradise 💯
Key Highlights:
💡Elon's response to the reduction in workforce: "Unfortunately there is no choice when the company is losing over $4M/day"
💡The company also said it will soon be launching other features, including the ability to post longer videos
💡Twitter will also incorporate priority ranking in replies, mentions and searches
💡There will be a $8 a month fees for users who want a blue verification check mark
Our Thoughts💡: So let us get this straight.. Elon bought Twitter, axed half the workforce, he now wants to rehire those folks AND ban comedians after vowing to bring back comedy.. 🤷🏻♀️
Sounds like another billionaire snowflake with a fragile ego👇🏻
Metaverse 🌎 : Companies are spending billions of dollars to dominate the metaverse- a hypothetical virtual world where they can live, work and play, BBC Tech reports.
While the "Metaverse" has taken the internet by storm, mainly due to Facebook’s rebrand to Meta, it's exciting to see the world moving towards virtual technology.
Hmm.. if Zuckerberg thought living in the metaverse was so awesome, why did he just buy 110 acres in Hawaii?
Key Highlights, according to BBC:
💡Almost $2bn has been spent on virtual land over the past 12 months, research shows.
Virtual land is being sold through online platforms such as 'Decentraland' and 'Voxels'.
💡Celebs, too, want a piece of the pie with people like Snoop Dogg and corporate investors including Samsung, UPS and Sotheby's snapping up digital real estate, hoping it will rise in the future, BBC reports.
💡J.P. Morgan has added some fun to the experience, with a roaming tiger and a floating portrait of CEO Jamie Dimon in a dedicated virtual lounge on Decentraland.
The idea is that clients can visit the lounge and get a taste of the metaverse.
💡Nike has launched digital Air Jordans in Nike Land (We're all for this, def don't wanna get caught in the metaverse with Reebok on)
Nike land has recorded over 25 million visits in the past year alone
💡Luxury fashion designer Philipp Plein has bought a plot about the size of four football fields
💡Gucci Town has had more than 36 million visits in the year since it was launched. In Gucci Town, players can buy clothing for their avatars with real money.
💡Boeing has vowed to create its next airplane in the metaverse. (Awesome, there's nowhere we feel quite as home as in the skies)
Our Thoughts💡: Folks who are hullabalooing about how ridiculous the metaverse is just don't get how high the stakes are here.
We're in the beginning stages of an explosive shift from Web2 to Web3 and the capitalists get it.
The truth is that Web3 is still not fully understood by the masses. Early adopters will capture the market completely.
Health 💊 : 'Alarming' rise in Type 2 Diabetes in the UK among those aged below 40.
Experts say the "incredibly shocking" data exposes the impact of increasing obesity levels.
We mean, it definitely didn't help that companies like Krispy Kreme, Budweiser and Nathan's Hot Dogs were offering free doughnuts, beer and weiners to everyone who got the jam the past 2 years
Which, tbh, is great news for anyone who wanted to avoid the virus but still had an obesity wish 🙈
Key Highlights, according to The Guardian:
💡23% rise in the no. of people aged below 40 being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the past 4 years
💡Those over 40 still make up the vast majority of cases
💡The UK ranks among the worst in Europe with the most overweight and obese adults, according to the WHO.
💡In terms of obesity rates alone, the UK ranks 3rd after Turkey and Malta
Our Thoughts💡: November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. PLEASE don't ask a person with Diabetes if they're "allowed to have chocolate" this month. For the love of god 🙏
For those actually looking to get Diabetes, Skittles are half off at CVS 🍭
Climate Change 🏔 : The World's most famous glaciers to vanish in the coming decades, UN reports.
UNESCO data shows that 1/3 of glaciers at World Heritage sites are "very likely" doomed to melt by 2050, no matter what climate change measures are undertaken at this point.
💡This includes some at Yosemite National Park and all sites in Africa, including Kilimanjaro National Park and Mount Kenya.
💡Furthermore, Nepal recently announced it was moving the Mount Everest Base camp due to global warming.
The new camp is to be moved to a lower altitude by 200-400m as the emergence of open glacier cracks had become problematic for climbers.
💡While 1/3 of glaciers are doomed, it is still possible to save the other two-thirds, if the rise in global temperatures does not exceed 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial period.
This is possible but will prove to be a major challenge for COP27.
Our Thoughts💡: While the Nepalese are busy moving mountains and teens like Greta Thunberg are camping outside the Swedish Parliament to save the world, people like Barack Obama are building MULTI-MILLION dollar oceanfront mansions in Hawaii.
For someone who CONSTANTLY rants about the climate, he sure likes buying real estate right by the water.
