This Week in Review ☕️ : The New Calorie Count this year | Sustainability leads shopping | Picassos and Warhols | Meryl Streep knows best | You can buy more than a Tesla with your Bitcoin now | Luxury
This Week's Digest:
Face masks. During a pandemic. Groundbreaking.
️Quick Bites:
Consumer Brands🧴: Carbon is the new Calorie in 2021.
Major Consumer Brands are introducing Carbon-Emissions labels to their product packaging, WSJ reports.
Imagine nutrition labels but for a product's carbon footprint: "Wow! Check out these Glazed Donuts! They've got 4 grams of fat, 5 grams of sugar but use 100g of carbon"
Buy or Nah?
Large corporates like Unilever are exploring how to include this data. If you've been sanitizing your hands, used a brand-name cotton swab, or applied petroleum jelly to your chapped lips, it’s almost certain that you’ve used a Unilever product.
Think- Vaseline, Lifebuoy, Dove, St.Ives.. Ring a bell?
Unilever says it wants to add those details for all 70,000 of its products.
As the threat of Global Warming increases, Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious to make better choices, for themselves and the planet.
Moreover, other major companies like Quorn Foods, L'Oreal and Oat Milk brand Oatly (valued at $10bn & soon headed for an IPO) are also figuring how to provide carbon data on their products.
In the future, these labels will be as common as the Calories label in any product. Although you know what they say: Count the Memories, Not the Calories!
PS. This does not apply to those who ate enough Chocolate Eggs on Easter to crash their Calorie Counting apps! Y'all know who you are 🙄
Art 🎨 : 31-year old Crypto investor, Justin Sun, buys $20million Picasso at Christie's sale in London last week.
Sun placed the winning bid for Picasso’s 1932 Femme Nue Couchée au Collier, a nude painting of his first mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter, ARTNews reports.
The Chinese Tech entrepreneur is the Founder of one of the largest cryptocurrency platforms, TRON, and the CEO of BitTorrent.
In addition to the Picasso, Sun also purchased Andy Warhol's 1986 Three Self Portraits for $2mn. (shown below)
Coincidentally, he was also the underbidder who lost out on the auction for the record-breaking $69mn NFT by digital artist Beeple.
Guess the dude will just have to settle for Picassos and Warhols instead 🤷♂️
Justin Sun is known to be a big spender and has often come in the news for his extravagant purchases.
According to Bloomberg:
💡In 2018, Sun bought BitTorrent for $120mn
💡In 2019, he paid $4.5mn to have lunch with Warren Buffett
💡Sun has paid for celebs like Kobe Bryant at his company events
💡As of 2021, he invested $10mn in GameStop, just near the peak of it's rally
Cryptocurrency📈 : You can buy more than a Tesla with your Bitcoin now.
Just after Visa's announcement that it will allow customers to settle payments using cryptocurrency, Paypal is the latest to start accepting crypto at checkout from here on.
So, Matt Gaetz' escorts accept Apple Pay & $BTC but the bodega on my corner doesn't?
While people have called it a speculative asset in the past, many are backtracking as household names like BlackRock, Tesla and BNY Mellon are embracing the blockchain revolution.
Our Thoughts💡: Central Banks will be exposed- you either join the $BTC club and ride the beta wave or you're out. No third way this works; Go Big or Go Home
While Visa has jumped on the bandwagon, Mastercard is still contemplating. This is why Mastercard HQ in St. Louis. Have fun staying in Missouri 👋
PS. Forward this email if you're holding!! 🚀
Space 🚁 : The first chopper on Mars is officially on Martian soil. NASA's Ingenuity Helicopter touched down on the Red Planet yesterday.
No small feat given flying on Mars is a lot trickier than flying on Earth. For starters, it's density is just 1% as dense as the Earth's surface and it's gravity one-third of the Earth.
Key Highlights:
💡Ingenuity costs $85mn
💡The drone weighs just 1.8kg
💡It relies on a rechargeable battery to keep its systems warm during the harsh nights up there
💡It is the 1st drone sent to another world
💡It is carrying 2 cameras to document its flights
Pandemic 🦠: WHO-China report says Covid-19 has 'natural animal origin' and a lab leak is 'extremely unlikely'.
Hmm.. and the Wuhan Institute of Virology which holds thousands of live viruses just *happened* to be right around the corner
The "virus most probably has its ecological reservoir in bats" and "it likely came from bats to humans via another animal."
"Maybe not alive, maybe frozen, maybe killed before they got there, but they were there."
