Quick Bites:
Food 🍔 : Drive-Thru restaurants here to stay as pandemic habits stick, Bloomberg Pursuits reports.
When Covid-19 hit, people didn't stop going to restaurants; they just went to the drive-thru 🚘
PS. Drop a 🍔 if you've ever thought about your ex in the McDonalds drive-thru ;)
While they were already popular, with Wendy's opening its first one in 1970 followed by Mcdonald's in 1975, the pandemic furthered the trend to a whole new level.
Even post-vaccination, it's clear that minimal contact with customers is the safest way to increase sales.
The result has been a burst of creativity and fierce competition for real estate.
New entrants like billion-dollar salad startup ‘Sweetgreen’ and ‘Shake Shack’ are trying to revolutionize the game via a more modern pick-up experience by integrating their apps and a sleek design.
Nearly 50% of Sweetgreen's total revenue in 2021 came through orders placed on their app or website with the salad chain stating "Digital customers are our most habitual users."
McDonald's, too, doubled down on this shift as the burger chain announced it will create dual drive-thru lanes to allow 2 customers to order simultaneously, and even a 3rd lane for larger orders.
“We moved something like 300mn additional cars through our drive-thrus,”
-McDonald’s CEO earlier this year.
Our Thoughts💡: Meanwhile.. all this talk about food got us pulling up at the Taco Bell drive-thru for our 3rd Naked Chicken Chalupa today 🌮 👇🏻🙈
Finance 💰 : The British pound fell 4.5% in August, its steepest monthly decline since Brexit amid increasing political turmoil.
The sterling now stands at $1.16 in comparison to the dollar, which has risen to a two-decade high.
The falling pound indicates a bleak outlook of the British economy, with consumers facing rising inflation and sky-high electricity bills, FT reports.
Energy prices are predicted to cross £5,000 this winter, making it more costly to heat and power homes- enough for people to contemplate returning to the office this winter!
Well, that's one way to get people back into their stuffy suits! Bills so damn high that you don't have a choice!
The Bank of England has predicted the UK will fall into recession towards the end of this year.
This comes a few months after the Governor warned of ‘apocalyptic’ food costs and that food, fuel and energy prices would continue to rise.
Our Thoughts💡: Folks already have to deal with higher food prices, a choppy stock market, unchecked illegal immigration, sky-high electricity bills and a proxy war in Europe. And to top it off, Brits are now gonna go in a full-blown recession ?!?!
A rocky road ahead for Liz Struss 🙈
Work 💻 : "What? A four-day work week?"
New research shows- Thursdays are the new Fridays.
Personally, we're thrilled. Tequila Thursdays> Fajita Fridays ANYDAY! 🙌🏻
Office attendance has fallen to 12% on Fridays globally and 13% in the UK, according to Advanced Workplace Associates data.
The trend of workers going on a pub crawl on Thursdays is increasing post-pandemic, suggesting that Thursday has become the "weekend".
Meanwhile, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the most popular days to commute to work, Financial Times reports.
Key Highlights, according to FT:
💡People are going out less often, but spending more when they do go out
💡Lunch outings are on the rise
💡43% of bar/restaurant outings are pre-booked
💡Cocktails have seen a huge rise in popularity post-pandemic
💡People are making healthier choices; with No/Low spirits now worth £10m vs £1m pre-pandemic
While the world is debating a 4-day work week, new research from The Wall Street Journal shows that those born from 1997 onwards say they don't want to work in an office full time.
Those who graduated right before or during the pandemic have never set foot in an office. They don't know the value of in-person interaction- nor do they wish to.
Our Thoughts💡: Our POV this coming Thursday:
Dialing into Zoom from the Dunkin' drive-thru. And damn.. their new Butter Pecan Sundae Latte is gonna be the MVP of this meeting
PS. On a completely unrelated note: Can Dunkin' execs bring back the Banana-split flavor? Please?! We need the potassium to get back to our health routine 🍌
Health💉: As monkeypox cases rise globally, so are myths and misinformation about the disease.
Here are some monkeypox myths that are FALSE, reported by Huffington Post:
💡Monkeypox only spreads through sex
"Is sex required, obligatory, mandatory to acquire monkeypox? The answer is NO"
💡Monkeypox is just like Covid-19
"It is not easy to control, but it is not as difficult- it's not in the same ballpark- as respiratory viruses"
💡Monkeypox only affects a certain population
While its primarily spreading among men/non-binary/transgender individuals who have sex with men, anyone who is intimately exposed to the virus can be infected
💡Monkeypox is a new illness
The disease was first identified in the late 1950s and has been endemic in certain West and Central African countries
Meanwhile, some stats on US Monkeypox cases:
💡May 18: 1
💡May 26: 10
💡June 16: 1,00
💡July 13: 1,000
💡July 29: 5,000
💡August 10: 10,000
💡September 2: 20,000
