Quick Bites:
World News 🌍 : President Donald Trump pauses tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China for 30 days after opening the doors for a global trade war earlier this weekend.
The tariffs were a full reversal of a duty-free trade between the three nations that has existed for several years.
Brace yourselves. Life is about to get a WHOLE LOT more expensive- and it won’t just be maple syrup, tequila and fortune cookies 🥠
Trump signed these executive orders from Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida this past Saturday.
The tariffs have already led to massive backlash and could further escalate into a global trade war.
Even Trump acknowledged the potential for negative consequences on Americans.
Umm at this point, having a carton of whole milk and brown eggs in your refrigerator is going to be the ultimate flex 🤯
These tariffs impact the lower and middle class the most. We can never understand people vote against their own interests????
Increase in groceries and daily household goods has a disproportional impact on certain demographics because it’s taking a MUCH larger chunk of your income ppl !!
Key Highlights, reported by Bloomberg:
-Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico
-The administration aimed to target the nation's two largest trading partners in an attempt to "stop the flow of migrants and drugs into the country."
-Energy resources from Canada will have a lower 10% tariff
-Trump has also imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, effective immediately
-These tariffs could lead to potentially much higher costs, disrupted supply chains and the loss of jobs.
-“There could be some temporary, short-term disruption, and people will understand that [..] But the tariffs are going to make us very rich and very strong- and we’re going to treat other countries very fairly”
-Trump told reporters
The Response:
Mexico: President Claudia Sheinbaum said her country will impose retaliatory tariffs
Canada: Trudeau announced retaliatory 25% tariffs on US goods, that will be “far-reaching and include everyday items.”
Affected items will include American alcohol, produce, clothing, shoes, household appliances, furniture, materials such as lumber, and “much more”, Trudeau said.
China: It will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization and “take corresponding countermeasures".
Beijing said tariffs are “not constructive” and will only “undermine” work by both nations to combat narcotics.
China “provides support to the US on the issue of fentanyl” but ultimately, “fentanyl is America’s problem,” the ministry said.
Mental Health 🧠 : Gen Z is already burning out.
They might be the youngest group in the workforce, but Generation Z is already facing burnout, Business Insider reports.
We love baby boomers who say “Young kids today don’t even know how to write cursive” in a negative way like ok grandma you can’t even turn your laptop on without getting 6 viruses and wiring half your retirement money to a Nigerian prince
In a recent Gallup study, workers under 35 reported feeling disengaged with work than their older counterparts for the first time in almost 20 years.
Data also showed that younger workers are the most worried about AI harming their career prospects.
Honestly? Can you blame them? They didn’t grow up like us in the 000s without an iPhone. Ofc they’re stressed af..
They will NEVER know the feeling of going home after school and watching the Suite life of Zack and Cody with a plate of cookies and then playing Club Penguin on the computer before tea
Key Highlights, reported by a recent Cigna Survey:
-Nearly all Gen Z workers (98%) are battling burnout symptoms
-Out of which 23% say that they experience "unmanageable stress" and 48% reporting that they feel drained
-Increased loneliness, student loan debt, sky-high rent and cost-of-living, ongoing layoffs, and hyper-competitive job market are key reasons
-Most Gen Zers are juggling more than one job, while others have had little choice but to pursue the difficult path of entrepreneurship
Drinks🥂: As we rang in the new year, many of you might have bought a bottle of champagne to ring it in with a celebratory “pop.”
But the climate crisis could ruin any upcoming champagne celebrations, new data suggests.
And on Sunday we honor the genius who discovered that the addition of orange juice to champagne makes it an official part of a balanced breakfast 🍊
The three grapes used in almost all champagne- chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier - are on the brink of extinction, according to CNN.
That’s because the human-caused climate crisis is affecting weather patterns in some of the world’s best-known wine-growing regions, including Champagne in northern France.
Background💡: Champagne remains an icon of luxury; more than 325 million bottles were shipped from Champagne in 2022, surpassing $.6.6 billon in sales for the first time, according to champagne trade association Comité Champagne.
It was also recently reported that champagne outperformed gold and the S&P 500 last year.
However, Europe's soaring temperatures are sparking concern that France's Champagne region could soon become unsuitable for production.
The region’s exposure to physical risk caused by drought is set to almost triple by the 2050s, CNBC.
International brands are aware of the massive impact climate change can have on their businesses.
Our Thoughts💡: There comes a time in EVERY woman’s life when the only thing that helps is a glass of champagne. Period.
PS. Who else has had the infamous “Most expensive grilled cheese” in NYC ($250) made with Dom Perignon champagne, edible gold and very rare Caciocavallo Podolico cheese??
Yep there is no end to rich people madness 🤯
Fashion👖: Baggy Jeans are back- and its all because of tech.
Levis has been making jeans since the 1850s intuitively but it has recently used Google to determine what kind of jeans users wants.
Ladies we hate to break it to you: PLEASE don't wear skinny jeans if you have no skinny gene
And Men: For all you guys wearing skinny jeans, we think you took the expression "getting into her pants" the wrong way. The VERY very wrong way🫢
PS. It's ASTOUNDING how much one's stress level goes down with the simple act of switching from skinny to baggy jeans 🙏🏻
Levis partnered with Google Cloud in 2020 to collect and analyze purchase data not only from its own stores but from retailers across the web and around the world, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The partnership led to "a little bit of a surprise": It wasn't just Gen Z declaring the death of the skinny jean
Data showed that Baggier fits were gaining popularity across demographics. The insight allowed the brand to adjust its inventory and marketing in favor of looser styles.
Key Highlights, reported by WSJ:
-The new data helped the company understand that baggy jeans weren’t just for the TikTok generation- they were for everyone
-As a result, Levi’s dove into marketing campaigns like “Live Loose”
-The insight also informed ordering decisions to keep the more loose fits in stock and influenced future design choices
-The Google initiative helped them understand the scope and scale of the trend- that it went beyond younger women and even encompassed older consumers and men- and quickly move to provide those options,
“As we introduce looser and baggier fits, we see that demand shifting towards ever more looser, ever more baggier fits”
“Ultimately the goal is financial benefit, but it really is grounded in the customer: making sure that we’re relevant, making sure that we’ve got that relevant flow of newness—that’s really what’s motivating all this work,”
-Levis Chief Digital Officer Jasom Gowans
Culture🐶: Return-to-office takes toll on pet-food sales.
Pet treats, in particular, saw a double-digit decline in sales in the most recent quarter at food giant General Mills, Fortune reports.
PS. Our company has a 100% pet-friendly policy. BIG DOG MOM ENERGY OUT HERE. NO ONE neglects our furry friends 👋
Hmm.. we feel a lot of media outlets are pushing WFH. Like drop it already. Some of us like working around other people in an in-person setting.
On a related but unrelated note: Why is it ok to call oatwater 'milk' but we have to call our real milk 'pet food' ???
Funny times
Sales from beds to food, which surged during the pandemic as more people adopted pets, are now dropping.
With back to the office mandates, "pet parents are increasingly away from home"
Petco and Chewy are are both down more than 50% on the stock market this year, Bloomberg reports.
Our Thoughts💡: A short-term fix might be allowing employees to bring their pets to the workplace.. because don't you wanna be the person your dog thinks you are?!
Tbh, the presence of pets isn't just for their benefit but also for ours! From reducing stress to having a cute lil companion greet you, pets in the workplace could contribute to a much happier work environment!
