Dating Burnout 🐝
This Week in Review☕️: The Olympics get a New Designer | Celebrities hit a Home Run | Talk of the town in Paris | Hollywood x Venture Capital | Dangerous Heatwave sweeps the world | Mental Health 2021
Quick Bites:
Work 💻 : Dating app Bumble closes offices to give a week off to "burnt-out" staff.
Definitely swiping right on this story 👉
The multi-billion dollar company has had a swamped year, with an IPO debut and rapid growth given how social distancing gave a virtual push to online dating.
Companies like LinkedIn, Mozilla, and now Bumble are experimenting with pressing pause.
Lets be honest- The collective burnout is real.
Kudos to Whitney Wolfe Herd for breaking the glass ceiling & calling it like it is!
Us normal, non-billionaire folk are blown away by this novel step💯
The paid holiday is meant to give the company's 700 employees the "opportunity to shut off and focus on themselves for a week."
Hmm.. there's a 0% chance this wasn't cleverly calculated to avoid increasing salaries.
Meanwhile, Bumble employees right now👇🏻
Our Thoughts💡: Entrepreneurs don't give a damn about Corona, you, me & the rest of the world.. They just move forward, relentlessly.
Which tbh, is great unless you're the overworked & underpaid employee making it happen. Especially with Covid churning out a new variant by the minute.
2021 Energy💡: Mental 👏 Health 👏 is 👏 Everything 👏
Venture Capital x Celebs📈 : Looks like Robert Downey Jr. is living up to his Tony Stark "Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist" image by taking on a new role of restoring our environment.
Robert Downey Jr's "Footprint Coalition"- a climate-focused venture capital fund, has been a leading investor in a bunch of planet-saving startups.
The companies it has recently invested in:
💡eBIOAtlast: Uses DNA technology to conserve wildlife
💡Sealed: Cuts homeowners energy costs by 25%
💡TurnTide: The 'World's most reliable, efficient & intelligent motor system'
💡AtLast: Develops "Whole-cut" meat replacements
💡YNSECT: Converts Food Waste into Premium Protein
Entering the world of Venture Capital has been a home run for celebrities.
As we self-medicate with booze and burgers, celebs are minting money, one investment at a time :
💡Ashton Kutcher: Has own fund called 'A-Grade Investment'; Investor in Spotify, Airbnb and Uber
💡Will Smith: Has own fund called 'The Dreamers Fund'; Investor in beauty brand 'Julep' and campsite booking startup 'Hipcamp'
💡Jessica Alba: Investor in startups 'Headspace' and 'Managed by Q'
💡Madonna: Investor in 'Vita Coco' Coconut Water brand
💡Oprah: Invested $43mn in WeightWatchers; today at +$400mn
💡Leonardo di Caprio: Investor in 'Suja Juice' which makes health drinks like Kombucha & 'Casper'- the mattress company
💡Arnold Schwarzenegger: Early-stage investor in Google
Talk about a career pivot; Just shows, you can leverage your stardom way beyond your main gig.
Our growing suspicion: every celeb will eventually become a VC.
As more businesses look alike, Brand Equity is the name of the game🙌🏻
Retail 🛍 : The talk of the town in Paris this week! :
16 years and a billion dollars later, Luxury Giant LVMH opens iconic department store 'La Samaritaine' in Paris.
Located between the Notre Dame and Louvre, La Samaritaine has been revamped by the French conglomerate to be a game changer for high-end retail.
President Emmanuel Macron and luxury magnate Bernard Arnault inaugurated the 150-year old building last week. The shopping center aims to increase tourist spending as travel restrictions ease.
Say what you want but LVMH's Bernard Arnault knows a thing or two about revamping a Fashion House. Case in point- Bvlgari.
With a no-expense-spared-renovation, we expect La Samaritaine to be no exception!
Our Thoughts💡: Since decades, luxury brands have flocked to the ultimate fashion capital of the 21st century: Paris.
But.. in our opinion, the city has become a playground for the rich at the cost of its authenticity.
Like giving a charismatic 70 year old a facelift and quashing her character.. Quel Dommage!
But then again, legendary artist Andy Warhol once mused on the future:
"Someday, all museums will become department stores, and all museums will become department stores"
If the king of pop art could endorse art deco malls back in the day, then:
Get in losers! We're going shopping! 🛒 👇🏻
Culture x Sports 🧦: Things we did not see coming today: Kim Kardashian to dress US Olympians🇺🇸
And to think it all started with a PG-13 tape with a C-list rapper. Glorious turn of events🙌🏻
Kim Kardashian's SKIMS shapewear brand will design the official Team USA undergarments, pajamas and loungewear for the athletes in Tokyo this year.
Yep, it's true.. The devil works hard but Kris Jenner def works harder!
"Ever since I was 10 years old, I’ve heard every single detail about the Olympics from my stepdad. [..]
When I received the call inviting Skims to be a part of TeamUSA, every moment I’ve spent admiring the strength and energy of the Olympians from the sidelines came full circle."
-Kim Kardashian
Our Thoughts:
💡A DVD Diva
💡A Reality TV Star
💡A Cover Girl
💡A Beauty Mogul
💡A Olympian
💡A MVP
We see you Kim K! As the billionaire herself says "not bad for a girl with no talent."
Not bad indeed!🙌🏻
Climate Change ☀️ : A dangerous heatwave is sweeping in the Pacific northwest, with record-breaking temperatures over the past weekend.
The heat is so rare that it's expected just once in 1,000 years.
Planet Earth to Humans: You hear me now?! 🔈
From California to Canada, a heat dome has enveloped the area. Updates:
💡Seattle: 106 degrees F
💡Portland: 114 degrees F
💡Lytton, British Columbia: 117 degrees F
To put that in perspective, a region in British Columbia, equaled Las Vegas's all-time hottest temperature, Axios reports.
"This is the beginning of a permanent emergency. That is why it is so disturbing"
-Washington Governor. Inslee
Our Thoughts💡: Like George Carlin said:
The.Planet.Will.Be.Fine. We.Are.F**ked!
On that note🍦: For those with good ACs, its time to be generous and invite us over for cold beers and popsicles! 🍺
PS. Popsicle calories don't count during a heatwave right?
