Glazed Doughnuts & Diamonds 💎
This Week in Review ☕️ : The Fat Free Industry makes a comeback | The Top Drinking Spot in Asia | Bad Parenting 101 | Krispy Kreme and Budweiser | Diamonds are Forever | Hot Girl Summer
Quick Bites:
Health 🥬 : The Diet Industry takes a financial hit during the pandemic.
Just as the term “Freshman 15” is synonymous with the 1st year of college, the “Quarantine19” has become associated with weight gain during the pandemic.
We mean, it definitely doesn't help that Krispy Kreme, Budweiser and Nathan's Hot Dogs are offering free doughnuts, beer and weiners to everyone who got the jam.
Which, tbh, is fantastic news for anyone who wants to avoid the virus but still has an obesity wish.
Since the onset of Covid-19, over 40% of US adults have gained weight- 29 lbs on average.
According to MarketData, the overall US Diet Industry reached a new peak of $78bn in 2019, but lost 21% of it's value in 2020.
With zero parties/ weddings/ summer vacays, the closest we got to Bikini season was scrolling through Conde Nast on Instagram.
Then there was the time-honored tradition of eating ourselves into a Thanksgiving FoodComa. Just enough Pumpkin Pie to hibernate until.. well, right about, now.
However, with vaccination rates increasing, weight-loss companies are having a comeback.
Suddenly, our social media is full of fat-shredding apps, supplements and magic pills. From keto to the vegan diet, marketing buzzwords like "wellness" and "wholesome" are making the rounds.
Long story short- yes, y'all got fat and yes, we're here to make some bucks off your lazy a**.
Our Thoughts💡: Just tried to put on our 2019 jeans. Turns out being stuck at home and eating garbage for a year makes you gain weight? Wtf all we wanted to do was raid the cookie jar without judgement (& the extra pounds) 🍪
Us after we eat all our quarantine snacks in one night👇🏻
Luxury 🛳 :Yep, the rumors are true! Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos is buying a 420-foot superyacht, that will be larger than a football field.
The vessel will be one of the largest sailing yachts ever built in the Netherlands, the unofficial capital of boat-building for the uber-rich, according to Bloomberg.
The superyacht is estimated to cost a whopping $500mn, Bloomberg reports.
No biggie tbh. The dude makes $350mn a day-that's less than 2 days of work.
PS. The quickest way to a $100bn net worth is to start a company and go public with a $1trillion market cap.
We don't get why more kids don't do this ?!
Imagine a yacht so big, it has its own "support yacht" with a helipad.
Bezos: "Hmm, so i can either give my employees higher wages during the pandemic.. or, alternatively- and hear me out- I can buy a damn boat thats so big it needs a junior damn boat"
Good God.
Bezos buying a superyacht is basically the same as us buying a McDonald's Happy Meal 🍟
$500mn = 0.25% of his money
Well, atleast now we know why he stepped down as CEO in February.. probs looking forward to Rum Punches and a quieter life in the Caribbean lmao
Diamonds 💎 :The World's Biggest Jeweler- Pandora, announces it will stop selling mined diamonds and focus on more sustainable, laboratory-grown ones.
Tbh, Diamonds are just lumps of graphite exposed to high pressure. If it's Bigger, Sparklier, Cheaper AND Environment-friendly? Count us in! 🙌🏻
The Danish company announced “it’s the right thing to do” as part of its plan to go carbon-neutral in 4 years.
The global production of lab-grown diamonds increased to 7mn carats last year.
Whereas mined production fell to 111mn carats, from its peak of 152mn in 2017, BBC reports.
Synthetic or real, a gool ol' emerald cut is forever.
PS. Does anyone have any diamond-worthy pressure at home? 🥜👇🏻
Fitness 🚴 : "I put the Peloton bike in the kitchen of our $20mill Hamptons home so I can get a workout and also cook the vegan kidney-bean tortilla soup I downloaded from NY Times"
The disruptive bike startup has been one of the few winners this pandemic as customers turn to at-home exercise to maintain their fitness.
However, it has come under attack for security reasons regarding its $4000 treadmill called "The Peloton Tread".
Peloton recalled 125,000 of its treadmills after a child's death plus 70 other injuries including "multiple reports of children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under" the device.
Zoom CEO admits he has Zoom Fatigue. Peloton CEO recalls its treadmills. Crappy week for stay at home stocks 📈
The company initially refused to order a recall. It took nearly 3 weeks for the company, which estimates therecall will cost it about $165mn in lost sales,to essentially be shamed into taking action, CNN reports.
Umm.. How is this not directly associated with 'Bad Parenting 101'?
PS. Can they also recall the constant, cringy advertisements?
Our Thoughts💡: Tbh, we always knew Peloton's gonna be a very, very overpriced clothing hangar 30 seconds into a vaccine.
The fact that people are still staying in & working out despite getting the jam .. Damn, pretty awesome for a machine with an IPad attached
