Quick Bites:
Tech ✈️ : Google accused of "airbrushing" emissions from flying.
Google has excluded all global warming effects except CO2 from the emissions calculator of the Google Flights Platform, BBC reports.
As a result, flights now look like they have a much lower impact on the environment.
💡The chief scientist at Greenpeace- Doug Parr: Google has "airbrushed" a big chunk of the aviation industry's climate impacts from its pages.
💡Google's Response: It consulted its "industry partners" (whatever that means🤷🏻♀️)
Our Thoughts💡: Does your company/startup do a lot of corporate travel? Do any of you even care about the carbon footprint? 🤷🏻♀️
Well, in Google’s case, the good (or bad) news about being worth FOUR HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS is that you get to make your own damn rules!! 🙄
Food 🍔 : Calling all vegans! The special sauce to win the Burger Wars this year? Meat-free patties.
While every chain has their own version of the fast-food staple, 2022 dons a new accessory: A crispy, tender quinoa fillet.
Burger King is the latest chain which is aiming to transition its menu to 50% meat-free by 2030.
To initiate the shift, Burger King recently gave away 10,000 free plant-based whoppers and vegan royales to encourage customers to swap beef for an animal-free version.
In addition, Burger King recently added vegan bacon made by French startup La Vie (backed by actress Natalie Portman) to its 550 locations across France.
This comes as Mark Cuban-backed vegan bacon made from seaweed just launched in restaurants across New York and San Fransisco, Veg News reports.
From the Shroom Burger at Shack Shack to Burger King's Impossible Whopper with crinkle-cut pickles and a sesame seed bun, fast-food chains are experimenting with plant-based flavors to capture a global audience.
Our Thoughts💡: Catch us this September with a Beyond Meat burger, Chickpea chick'n nuggets, some plant-based Fro-yo, Truffle fries and a bottle of Gavi (if you're of age, ofcourse 🍷 )
Bc Diet starts next Monday👇🏻
Retail 🛍 : Shoppers are cutting back on clothing, forcing retailers to slash prices.
Inflation-weary shoppers are spending less money, prompting stores to cut prices to get rid of unsold inventory, Business of Fashion reports.
Earlier this month, US giants Walmart and Target were forced to offer massive discounts and rollbacks on clothing to clear racks.
Key Highlights, according to BoF:
💡Victoria’s Secret said they are seeing brands tailored for younger customers have a big decline in sales.
“We will be very prudent on our purchases” of apparel “for the back half of the year,” Victoria's Secret
💡Urban Outfitters' young, budget shoppers held off from purchasing full-priced items and waited “for promotions before buying,”
-Urban’s CEO
💡Kohl’s said that junior’s apparel saw a decline in sales in Q2 because the designs were “too much fashion, not enough of the basics”
“Some of the fashion choices were a little too young"
-Kohl’s CEO
💡However, demand for dressy-clothes and work attire was high at Kohl's as well as Macy’s, the companies said.
Many have noticed steep discounts on Gap and Old Navy labels, while brands like Banana Republic, which sell more of occasion and office-wear, have managed to sell more clothing at regular prices.
Culture 🧠 : Is mental health still a stigma in the workplace? BBC reports.
From mindful meditation to setting up zen spaces in the office, many companies made their teams' wellbeing a priority in the pandemic.
However, despite increased efforts, there is still a stigma around discussing mental health.
Roughly 91% of workers in the UK and 92% in the US say they believe those with mental health issues aren't treated the same, according to a recent survey.
This ultimately leaves employees less inclined to seek help at work, experts tell BBC WorkLife.
This comes as Prince Harry urged companies to give young staff more time to focus on their mental health, as he opened up about his own struggles with burnout recently.
Ok.. but we still haven't figured out what The Duke of Sussex gets burnout from? 🤔
As part of his work for wellbeing app BetterUp, The Duke of Sussex advised bosses to include:
💡Regular breaks
💡Create an environment where workers feel safe to ask for help
💡Offer wellbeing tech; meditation apps/online therapy
💡Workers be given time to do 'inner work' and enjoy 'me-time'
Our Thoughts💡: Hmm.. Prince Harry saying "every single person has access to @BetterUp coach" sounds more like he's using his royal status to sell a $279 per-month app for his own gain.. which is now ruining our mental health 🙏
