Quick Bites:
Work 💻 : How to get employees back at the office? Build a better office.
When designing the post-pandemic office, companies need to construct a space that employees actually want to come back to, Business Insider reports.
"At LinkedIn's headquarters, we created conference rooms that shape-shift on command. Some rooms nix the formality of a traditional long table and chairs to encourage a relaxed creative dialog"
-Ryan Mullenix, a partner at NBBJ Design firm
However, despite companies trying to improve office environments to encourage attendance, a recent survey showed that most Gen Z don't want to work in an office full time, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Around 69% of Gen Zers surveyed said they would like to work remotely atleast half the time.
Those who graduated right before or during the pandemic have never set foot in an office. They don't know the value of in-person interaction- nor do they wish to.
Our Thoughts💡: What the "corporate" world doesn't understand- for young adults, their profession is more than their monthly paycheck. It's about purpose, flexibility and mobility.
The pandemic has not only made WFH the 'new normal' but it has also boosted the remote work paycheck.
The truth is- you can make a lot of money working from your home.
Most importantly, the BIGGEST con of going back to the office: We'd have to start wearing pants again.
Hell, NO !! 👋
Culture 👩 : Rihanna is now worth $1.4bn- making her America's youngest self-made billionaire woman, CNBC reports.
She is also 2nd to Oprah as the richest female entertainer.
RiRi's response: "God is Good" 👏👏
According to Forbes, majority of her fortune comes from her beauty line 'Fenty Beauty'- which she owns 50% of.
The remainder comes from her stake in the Savage x Fenty Lingerie brand plus her earnings as a musician.
💡Robyn Rihanna of House Fenty
💡First of her name
💡Bajan Babe of Beauty
💡Skincare Sorceress
💡Commander of Cosmetics
💡Diva of Diamonds
💡Empress of the Universe
Our Thoughts💡: Britney is free. Rihanna is a billionaire. Reese Witherspoon is working with Blackstone. Madonna is still the Queen of Pop.
Our ladies crushin' it and we LOVE THAT! 🙌🏻 🙌🏻
Travel 🇮🇹 : Venice to start charging tourists an entrance fee.
Data showed that 4/5 of tourists that visited Venice in 2019- a total of 19 million people- came for the day, depriving the city's hotels of revenue.
Those who do not pay the entry fee face a fine of up to €300.
According to NY Times:
💡The word-first move will start from January 16, 2023
💡Tourists will have to book their visit online before entering
💡The fee will be between 3 and 10 euros
💡Those who stay overnight in hotels will be exempt
The 'City of Canals' is one of the most visited cities due to its beautiful bridges, gondola rides, famous carnivals and and winding streets by the lagoon. However, the excessive crowds are causing congestion.
This has impacted locals as Venetians have been moving away because living costs are also increasing.
“We are pioneers, the first city in the world to apply a measure that could be revolutionary,”
-Simone Venturini, the Venice Tourism Chief, told The Sunday Times
Pioneers or just dumb af? 🤔
Food 🥬 : Is the vegan revolution dying down?
When UK-based Honest Burgers opened its first vegan joint in London this year, it was ready to cater to consumers' inclination towards plant-based burgers.
However, just 6 months into the opening, Honest Burgers' co-founder Tom Barton stated that the popularity of meat-free and vegan diets on social media had not translated into sales.
Barton highlighted the higher cost of plant-based ingredients and suggested that closures in the industry like vegan chain By Chloe, indicated dwindling demand.
This comes as advertising watchdogs have increasingly been cracking down on companies for "misleading" customers about the benefits of a vegan diet.
Some key examples off late:
💡Grass maker Evergreen UK was told the lifecycle of its plastic grass meant it could not claim it was "eco-friendly"
💡A Sainsbury ad became controversial when it suggested switching meat for lentils and chickpeas was better for the planet
💡Leading oat-milk leader- Oatly ads were banned for "overstating" emissions made by the dairy sector recently.
💡Another Oatly ad claimed that climate experts said cutting dairy and meat from our diets was the single biggest lifestyle change people could make to reduce their environmental impact, The Times reports.
Our Thoughts💡: Honest Burgers' failed experiment of going vegan is worth contemplating over tbh. An interesting observation from an otherwise well-known chain.
Is there really such a massive difference between Instagram hype and reality on the ground?
