Netflix x Willy Wonka 🍫
This Week in Review ☕️ : Charlie & the Chocolate Factory | Reed Hastings and Roald Dahl | McDonalds to make Happy Meal Toys sustainable | Next partners with Gap | Google says Long live the Office |
Quick Bites:
Entertainment 📺 : Netflix has acquired the rights to the entire Roald Dahl catalog, including iconic stories like "Matilda" and "James and the Giant Peach."
Hmm.. we're not sure we trust Netflix to not butcher the memories of our childhood reading
Netflix says it will create a "unique universe" based around the "World's most loved stories" for its viewers. This acquisition will give the streaming gorilla an edge over its rivals as the streaming wars escalate.
Projects already in the works:
💡'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' animated series
💡An original on the Oompa-Loompas
💡'Matilda', the musical starring Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull
The Dahl Cinematic Universe is coming 🚀
Our Thoughts💡: Now watch as Reed Hastings turns 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' into a dark and mysterious Netflix series spanning 6 seasons, multiple spin-offs, stage shows and other live experiences.
Kinda bittersweet tbh. Grew up reading Dahl and can't picture its classics become massy.
Gotta admit their adaption of Lemony Snicket starring Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf was bomb tho 💣
WFH 💻 : Think offices are dead? Think again.
Google is going big in the Big Apple; the tech giant is buying a Manhattan office building for $2.1bn.
Its a pretty dope building btw- the St. John's Terminal. Known as the "lifeline of New York." Right by the Hudson River.
While we'll definitely miss WFH, our "home office" didn't exactly produce artisanal brews.. Those sub-par instant coffee mixes were becoming a drag tbh.
Now Google employees have free reign over its cafe-grade brews from Nescafe's Dolce Gusto to DIY Starbucks Vanilla Macchiato ☕️
The most expensive sale of a single US office building since 2019, "and one of the priciest in U.S. history," WSJ reports.
This is a sign of big tech's growing appetite for physical spaces despite the shift to remote work.
Google said its office will be an "anchor" and an "important part of its future" strategy.
Our Thoughts💡 : Finally, the world sees the value of in-person interaction. While people enjoyed less commute time and a flexible schedule, research also shows WFH led to longer hours.
Tbh, WFH has been way too hectic for us personally 😭
The only con of going back to the office: We'd have to start wearing pants again. FML.
Food 🍔 : McDonald's announces all Happy Meal toys will be "more sustainable" by 2025.
The burger chain, which sells more than 1 billion toys every year, hopes to lower its carbon footprint by using less plastic.
No confirmation yet if the new toys will be made of lumber
McDonald's will shift from plastics to plant-based materials like biodegradable corn from January 2022.
Sustainable Happy Meal Toys to make Mother Earth a little less sad in the future
If it achieves its target, the fast-food giant will have cut its use of plastic by 90% of 2018 levels, WSJ reports.
Our Thoughts 💡: Talking about the Happy Meal has flooded us with memories of our childhood. And the toys were always the best part.
Our personal fav was when McDonald's had a superhero-themed year; we got a Spider-Man and limited edition glasses for the release of Batman Forever!
Damn, when life revolved around French Fries and Strawberry Milkshakes 🍟 Now we all gotta worry about the theta variant taking us all out tf
Fashion 🧦 : Next forms a joint venture with Gap to keep it alive in the UK, BBC reports.
Next, which recently made a similar deal with Reiss and Victoria's Secret, will operate Gap's online business and concessions in the UK and Ireland.
Tbh, Next knows how to use its customer data. GAP's operations sucked so bad they just got addicted to discounting. This is a smart move to revive the American fashion giant
Next will own 51% of the new venture, while Gap will own 49%. The deal will enable customers to use Next's click-and-collect service at its 500 stores, BBC.
According to retail analyst- Natalie Berg, the deal is Gap's "best shot" [..] "The Gap brand might have lost its way but it's still a brand with a lot of heritage."
Our Thoughts💡: Quite an interesting partnership. For the longest time, our perception of both brands has been based on the in-store experience.
Will be intriguing to see Gap with its classic American branding co-exist with Next's British one under the same roof.
