Quick Bites:
Food x Sustainability 🍫 : Ben & Jerry's has partnered with Dutch company 'Tony's Chocolonely' to make their iconic chocolate 100% slave-free!
The American ice-cream brand will now source traceable cocoa via Tony’s Open Chain which aims to improve the working conditions of farmers.
Background💡: Slavery and child labour have been rampant in the industry for years, particularly in West Africa, where about 60% of the world’s cocoa is produced.
Ben & Jerry's will now only buy its cocoa directly from eight co-ops in Côte d’Ivoire, "allowing it to know which farmers produce its cocoa, and the social and environmental circumstances of that production," Fast Company reports.
The partnership will also see Ben & Jerry's launch "Chocolatey Love A-Fair", a new flavor based on Tony's milk caramel sea-salt bar.
In exchange, Tony's will drop 2 new chocolate inspired by Ben & Jerry's flavors.
Our Thoughts💡: Get ready to suddenly be bombarded with images of gooey Chocolate-Chip Cookie Dough on your feed. All with the premise of GUILT-FREE snacking, which makes those midnight sugar cravings so much more satisfying!
PS. Not to take away from the subject but speaking of Ben & Jerrys.. just added their Caramel Cookie Dough to our McFlurry.. kinda GENIUS🙌🏻
Work 💻 : Attention Brits! Will rising home bills push you to return to the office this winter? Energy prices are predicted to cross £5,000, making it more costly to heat and power homes.
Well, that's one way to get people back into their stuffy suits! Bills so damn high that you don't have a choice!
London workers could save £50 per week in January 2023 if they walked or cycled to work.
These savings are largely due to not having to heat a household for an entire working day, according to Bloomberg.
Elsewhere, research by Blackhawk Network, a UK Cycle to Work scheme, found that commuting by bicycle could save workers up to £760 per year.
Our Thoughts💡: What the "corporate" world doesn't understand- for young adults, their profession is more than their monthly paycheck. It's about purpose, flexibility and mobility.
The pandemic has not only made working from home the 'new normal' but it has also boosted the remote work paycheck.
You can make a lot of money working from your home, and the truth is- A LOT of people have.
However, looking at the forecasts, it's clear it's going to be a pretty challenging winter for fuel bills unless you've got a great fixed rate until next year!
Space heaters, electric blankets, a higher demand for hot water as you boil a kettle multiple times a day. To be honest, winters can be especially expensive, as heating costs become a matter of survival.
Not to mention, the lack of willingness to go out and socialize. When British winters get freezing, fleece is the way to go! 🧦
All you want to do is snuggle up which leads to more time being spent at home; thus, more electricity being used.
Our Thoughts💡: With the global debate around WFH/hybrid/back to office, how many of you think it's more practical to return to your cubicles this November?!
Health 🥬 : Fast-food chain Wendy's pulls the romaine lettuce used in its burgers as its potentially linked to the "fast-moving" E.coli outbreak.
Interesting to note that the French fries, Fried chicken sandwiches, Cheese & Bacon potatoes, Beef Tacos and Strawberry Frosties were all fine. It was the LETTUCE that caused the damn diarrhea 🤷🏻♀️
The CDC is currently investigating the origin that has hospitalized 10 and additionally sickened 37 people.
The infections have been linked to lettuce with most patients having eaten that in their sandwiches at Wendy’s that week.
“While the CDC has not yet confirmed a specific food as the source of that outbreak, we are taking the precaution of discarding and replacing the sandwich lettuce at some restaurants in that region,”
-Wendy's
The news of Wendy's tainted romaine comes after Subway was accused of scamming customers with its tuna last year.
Subway's tuna doesn't actually have tuna in it, but a 'mixture of various concoctions' the lawsuit alleged. Multiple lab reports found 'no trace of tuna' or any fish for that matter.
I guess calling it a Tuna Melt footlong just has a nicer ring to it than 'mayo-covered meat strings' 🙈
Our Thoughts💡: Yep, we know what you're thinking.. WHAT EXACTLY HAVE WE BEEN EATING AT SUBWAY ALL THIS TIME ?!
Tourism 🌍 : Tanzania installs high-speed internet on Mount. Kilimanjaro to attract more tourists, Bloomberg Africa reports.
Africa's highest mountain wants to triple visitors in 2 years as tourism accounts for most of the nation's forex earnings after gold exports.
The facility will allow "tourists to access live streaming services, make calls and post their mountain-climbing adventures on social media platforms, thus promoting our tourism sector"
-Tanzanian IT Minister
Key Highlights, according to Bloomberg Africa:
💡The new connectivity is expected to benefit around 1,000 climbers daily
💡Coverage will reach the Kilimanjaro summit by the end of the year
💡Until now, tourists depended on satellite phones for communication which made the trek very costly and some also felt unsafe, as per local tour guides
💡The aim is to increase tourists to 5 million annually by 2025
💡This is the East African nation's plan to leverage the tallest mountain on the continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world to increase earnings
