Soda Giants🥤
This Week in Review ☕️ : Pepsi and Coke are lagging behind | The internal memo from Google CEO to employees | Heat wave causes alarm globally | Governments get pressure to declare Climate Emergency |
Quick Bites:
Consumer Culture 🥤 : Coca-Cola and Pepsi's pledge to go zero-plastic is lagging.
Both soda giants have promised to reach net-zero emissions in the next 20-30 years, but a Bloomberg report raises concerns about that actually happening.
PS. No confirmation yet if the new bottles will be made of lumber
This comes as its reported that Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper emit 121m tons of GHGs- more than the entire climate footprint of Belgium. And Morocco.
Key Highlights, from Bloomberg:
💡Coca-Cola churned out 125bn plastic bottles globally in 2021 in the US
💡However, the lagging recycling rate means most of those bottles are still going in the trash
💡While this makes climate goals unrealistic, the beverage industry has recently shown willingness to consider any options that will keep bottles out of landfills
Our Thoughts💡: Tbh, we allow them by continuing to buy that daily Pepsi from our local CVS.
Sure, we'll have to give up its sweet, citrus-like flavor that people either loathe or love. Not to mention all that aspartame and acesulfame that makes it taste like a can of metallic-flavored artificial sweetener.
But let's face it💡: Climate Change is the defining issue of our time and we are at a defining moment.
The Crisis is more urgent now than ever and ANYTHING is better than single-use plastics for our planet at this point! 🙏
Work 💻 : Google CEO Sundar Pichai warns of "slowing down the pace of hiring."
In an internal letter to employees obtained by The Verge, Google says it will prioritize engineering and other critical technical roles over other hires through 2023.
Citing the "uncertain, global economic outlook", Pichai says employees will have to be "more entrepreneurial, working with greater urgency, sharper focus, and more hunger."
The news is indicative of the dwindling job market; Meta recently announced its cutting back on hiring while Twitter let go of 1/3 of its recruiters, Reuters reports.
Our Thoughts💡: Sometimes, its NOT you. Sometimes the reason you didn't get the job is NOT because you had a shitty interview or NOT enough experience or NOT because there was a better candidate.
Personally, we feel it's great that leading companies like Google are being transparent and forthcoming in these uncertain times.
Employees get the chance to validate their self-worth, not dwell on the past and move on.
Pandemic 🦠 : The number of Covid-19 cases worldwide has risen by 30% in the last two weeks; WHO warns pandemic "nowhere near over."
Vaccines working then?! 🙈
The latest variant will lead to a lot of reinfections, and more cases of long Covid, but won't be as deadly as earlier waves.
BA.5, the current sub-variant of Omicron, is certainly the most infectious so far, Bloomberg reports.
Should be called BS.5
Despite cases rising globally, the CDC has maintained to shorten Covid-19 isolation requirement to 5 days from 10 days.
Which also means the isolation requirement is "Whatever the f** your boss wants"👋
As long as you isolate for 15 mins after a 6-hour shift and for 30 mins after a 10-hour shift, you're fine
Our Thoughts💡: BREAKING NEWS: Omicron's new cousin- The Omicron BA.6 variant has been discovered and it could be harder to track.
WTF IS THIS? A FAMILY GATHERING?!🙄
Omicron & his fam coming to crush our summer plans👇🏻
NASA 🌏 : An image of a galaxy cluster revealing the earliest glimpse of the universe was released last week.
The new images were captured by the $9 billion James Webb Space Telescope.
Key Highlights:
💡The James Webb space telescope is the largest and most powerful observatory ever launched
💡The light captured took 13 billion years to reach the telescope's infrared camera
💡The image showcased by Biden and NASA chief Bill Nelson showed a 4.6 billion-year-old galaxy cluster named SMACS 0723
💡“We are going back almost to the beginning,"- NASA
