The Gin Wars🍸
This Week in Review ☕️ : Metaverse Takeover | Facebook pays price to rebrand | Gin and Tonic in demand this festive season | Omicron brings back a familiar feeling | Europe rolls out booster shots |
Quick Bites:
Big Tech 📲 : Facebook pays price to rebrand!
The tech behemoth has paid a whopping $60mn to acquire trademark rights for its new name 'Meta'.
A small price for what the future holds, if you ask us!
Also, if someone beats Zuckerberg to the metaverse, who will sell our data to teenage crimean hackers?!
Dude's gotta protect himself
The whopping sum paid asserts how valuable the Meta name has become for the technology giant, which is betting that its focus on the metaverse "will pay off handsomely in the coming years", Reuters reports.
Facebook sees the metaverse as the successor to the mobile internet.
Our Thoughts💡: Folks who are hullabalooing about how ridiculous this is just don't get how high the stakes are here:
💡We're in the beginning stages of an explosive shift from Web2 to Web3 and FB gets it
💡$60mn is less than half a day's revenue for FB (Pocket change for the Zuck)
💡Web3 is still not fully understood by the masses. Early adopters will capture the market completely
💡If Zuckerberg wants to continue selling our data to advertisers, they're gonna need bigger and better ways to advertise on
While concepts like the "metaverse" and "NFTs" have taken the internet by storm, mainly due to Facebook’s rebrand, it's exciting to see the moves other big brands are taking towards virtual technology:
💡Disney to launch NFT collectibles on VeVe
💡Budweiser plans NFT drop
💡McDonalds giveaway of McRib NFTs for the sandwich's 40th anniversary
💡Videogame maker Roblox is already using the metaverse concept in videogames
Pandemic 🦠 : Seems like the novel coronavirus continues to take its' toll globally as it mutates into yet another variant- The Omicron.
Covid-19 was the Black Swan of our decade that no-one, absolutely no-one was prepared for.
With what felt like the Zombie Apocalypse with half the planet on lockdown in 2020 could maybe repeat itself...again.
According to The New York Times, return-to-office dates are being postponed, restaurants are closing, travel plans are being canceled and holiday parties are being ditched.
Covid changing our plans again, bringing with it "a familiar feeling", NY Times.
This comes just as Europe rolls out booster campaigns and restricts borders to battle the highly mutated variant.
The WHO has also warned people of not underestimating the Omicron threat.
Our Thoughts💡: BREAKING: "Omicron's sister variant has been discovered and it could be harder to track."
WTF IS THIS? A FAMILY GATHERING?!
Omicron & his sis coming to crush your Christmas plans 👇🏻🙈
Retail 🛍 : Calling all festive (& boozy) shoppers! The Gin Wars have begun!
Marks & Spencer and Aldi are going head-to-head this holiday season, not over Christmas pudding, but gin liquor, BBC reports.
M&S has accused Aldi of infringement of its design. The retailer claims Aldi's Blackberry and Clementine gin is "strikingly similar" to its own Light Up gin.
Both gins come in a bell-shaped bottle with a light in the base and gold flakes in the liquid, BBC reports. (shown below)
This is the 2nd time both supermarkets have entered into a legal conflict with each other.
M&S’s legal battle with Aldi over their “Cuthbert the Caterpillar” cake- apparently a copy of the "Colin" cake M&S has been selling since the ‘90s is still ongoing.
Our Thoughts💡: Can we just have a Gin and Tonic without the petty ballyhooing?
PS. If Gin & Tonic were a rom-com, it'd be one of those snuggle season classics, like Sleepless in Seattle or Maid in Manhattan.
Simple on the outside but packs a punch on the inside 💯
Living 🌎 : Inflation hits 10-year high.
In the UK, inflation surged to 5.1%, citing food, petrol and household goods as the main drivers.
The Bank of England raised interest rates for the 1st time since the start of the pandemic from 0.1% to 0.25%.
In Europe, workers are pushing for wage bumps to keep up with the increasing cost of living, NY Times.
Well, no sh*t, the minimum wage has hardly changed since the 80s! How much was a cheeseburger back then vs now? And no, we're not talking about the Dollar menu at Burger King
Our Thoughts💡: For those who aren't aware of the rising inflation, stay alert.
Most supermarkets hide the increased prices.. unless you pay attention. Rather than charge more, they shrink the size of the product. 500g of cheddar soon becomes 450g, 400g, 350g, 300g.
Price stays the same but manipulation increases. Pay👏 attention👏 people👏
