The New Protein 🌱
This Week in Review ☕️ : Seaweed and Sustainability | Foods that makes you bulk | Current Viruses circulating in Wild Animals | Twitter board gives in to Musk | Earth is Hotter and Sicker this 2022 |
Quick Bites:
Big Tech📱: Twitter accepts Elon Musk's $44bn deal.
The Tesla CEO says he wants to "transform" Twitter into a "platform for free speech around the globe."
Musk managed to pull it off! From spending the GDP of several countries on a privatized space race to now advocating free speech.. Guess it pays to be the World's Richest Person🙌🏻
Key Highlights:
💡This would be one of the biggest-ever leveraged buyouts of a publicly listed company
💡Twitter initially tried to ward off the bid as a hostile takeover
💡The board came around after Musk disclosed he'd secured $46.5bn in financing
💡About half of the financing is bank debt, the rest is cash pledged by Musk himself
Let's take a look at his future plans for the platform:
💡An edit button
💡New features to enhance the product
💡Defeat spam bots and authenticate all humans
💡Open-source algorithms to increase trust
💡Less content moderation
Our Thoughts💡: Elon now owns Twitter, Bezos owns the Washington Post, Bill Gates has invested over $300mn in media platforms. Free speech? My a** 👋
PS. Who else predicts Dogecoin transactions on Twitter soon ?! 🐕
Food 🌱 : Seaweed could be the next big thing- as a source of protein and sustainability.
Researchers in Europe are focusing on seaweed as a sustainable alternative to both meats and traditional plastics, The Guardian reports.
Asians have long used seaweed for daily consumption. Think kimchi, spicy poke bowls, nori salads and the classic Barbecued surf & turf.
In fact, experts believe seaweed could be a key crop in the "protein shift" away from meat with about 30% protein content.
That would make it compete against the world’s other big protein sources like meat and soya, The Guardian.
Seaweed also doesn’t require freshwater or land area to produce.
According to Statista, Asian countries currently produce over 90% of the world’s seaweed supply, dominating the £14bn seaweed market.
However, EU organizations are now looking to commercialize the plant in Europe as well.
Our Thoughts💡: Made ourselves a midday snack: Roasted Seaweed chips with coastal sea salt + silver grade nori sushi with spicy crab and avocado 🍣
Climate Change ☀️ : The climate crisis will drive a "potentially devastating" surge in the number of new pathogens over the next 50 years.
According to the Telegraph, the future of planet Earth looks to be "not only hotter, but sicker"
Key Highlights, reported by Telegraph Global Health:
💡Global warming will expand the threat posed by diseases; species spread into new regions as temperatures change, bringing viruses with them.
For eg. the Zika mosquito virus spread which is currently spreading in Europe for the first time
💡Scientists are increasingly concerned about the risks posed by viruses "circulating silently" in wild animals.
💡Roughly 40,000 pathogens are estimated to be lurking in mammals such as bats, including some 10,000 which could infect humans.
"As the world changes, the face of disease will change too"
"Climate change & pandemics go hand-in-hand.. the more animals are forced to mix, the more viruses will jump species"
Our Thoughts💡: Planet Earth to humans: You hear me now ?! 🔈
Women 👧 : Calling all women! 'Menstrual leave' could be the new normal.
Allowing female employees to take time off during their period is slowing becoming the norm.
Finally! And for those who still don't get it, PMS IS effing PAINFUL!😭
On average, a woman menstruates for about 7 years during her lifetime.
On the 1st day of their cycles, most women experience a range of symptoms from cramps and nausea to dizziness and diarrhea.
It's crucial we acknowledge this pain in the workplace; female workers should be allowed to snuggle into bed and shove just about any ice-cream that is even semi-delicious into a pint cup and pig out!🍨 👇🏻
While period leave has been a legal right for women in countries like Japan and Indonesia for decades, companies in other regions like the US and Australia are getting onboard as well now, BBC reports.
Our Thoughts💡: Our period dopamine hits lately:
Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough Batter (yes, the one with the snackable oreo chunks), Dominoes California Chicken Ranch Pizza, Friends reruns and streaming Hulu till we sack out 😴
