Quick Bites:
Business x Climate Change❄️: When you're smart or wealthy, or even better, both- then you break out of the midwinter blues by going to Davos.
The World Economic Forum in Davos Klosters is a week away and billionaires and heads of state will descend on the "Super Bowl for the financial elite" in Switzerland very soon.
However, the biggest issue at this year's annual jamboree might not be about business or politics, but if there will be enough snow to ski! 🙈
The snowpack around the town of Davos has gone by 40% since the 1st one in 1971, Bloomberg reports.
While “climate” wasn't present on the summit’s agenda until 2014, its urgency to all things business has become evident.
More than a third of panel discussions at this year's meet are linked to climate change.
According to Bloomberg, Although Davos is perched at an altitude of 1,560 meters, this year’s winter heatwave saw the Swiss town being well above freezing in early January, with its mountains covered in brown grass and barren land.
Tbh, the atmosphere is heating up faster than we can imagine and a snow-free Davos tells the World's Top 1% that climate change is REAL af
Bout time
This comes as atleast 9 European countries recorded 'almost unheard of heat' this winter as warm January weather broke records across the continent.
Winter tourism represents approximately 1% of Swiss GDP, but over a whopping 10% for mountain regions like the Valais or Graubünden.
According to the UN, Switzerland is warming up at twice the global average rate due to the heat-trapping effect of its mountains.
Our Thoughts💡: As global temperatures rise, we now wonder how many of us even think its worth having our kids learn to ski?
In the past, puffers, moon boots, hand warmers and ski poles were a standard while planning Christmas and NYE 🎿
Not to mention the only time to binge on cheese fondue and hot chocolate (all in the name of sports) GUILT-FREE! 🤤
But unfortunately, that might no longer be a reality.. Better to act NOW folks! 🙏🏻
Food🌱: Eating disorders rates are spiraling statistically, yet we continue to obsessed over details of celebrities' strict eating regimes.
"What I eat in a day" videos are one of most popular categories across social media as the world continues to focus on outer appearance.
Just like us- entertainers are starting the year by making health choices with one obvious trend emerging: The shift towards a plant-based lifestyle.
Paleo, Pescatarian, Pollotarian, Non-Vegatarian, Vegetarian.. and we finally have a winner in 2023- Vegan.
Celebs are choosing to go vegan for different personal reasons- weight loss, the environment, animal protection, climate change, random experiment, lord knows
A look at the top celebs/ influencers ditching meat in 2023:
💡Harry Styles: In August 2022 during a concert in NYC, the audience prompted the singer to eat a chicken nugget that someone threw onto the stage.
“I don’t eat chicken. Sorry, I don’t eat meat,” he said before throwing it back to the crowd.
Gotta give Styles points for STYLE 🙌🏻
💡Kevin hart: The 43-year old comedian is the founder of 'Hart House'- a vegan fast-food chain, which he plans to take nationwide.
💡Kim Kardashian: The world watches every move of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, so we all already know Kim K loves vegan tacos made with Beyond Meat and has frequently mentioned that a plant-based diet helps with her psoriasis.
💡Drew Barrymore: The actress has claimed eating plant-based meals keeps her energy up and helps manage her weight. She's also a big fan of the 'Sakara' meal plan.
💡Serena Williams: She first tried the plant-based diet as a gesture of solidarity with her sister. Venus has followed a vegan diet for over a decade due to Sjogren’s Syndrome, a chronic autoimmune disease.
💡Snoop Dogg: He has been the face of Beyond Meat, invested in plant-based brands and raved about vegan restaurants, including 'Slutty Vegan'
Our Thoughts💡: Catch us this new year with a Beyond Meat burger, Chickpea chick'n nuggets, some plant-based Fro-yo, Truffle fries and a bottle of Gavi (if you're of age, ofcourse)
Bc Diet starts next Monday 🙈
Big Tech📈: Apple plans to own more of its own technology.
The tech giant has made no secret about its ambitions to develop its own 5G chips instead of paying for Qualcomm's chips.
Seems like the plan is finally in motion now as Bloomberg sources claim Apple is prepping its first in-house modem chip technology, slated to release late 2024.
The move will be a huge blow to one of its biggest suppliers as it aims to reduce its reliance on outside parties.
In addition to transitioning to its own in-house chips, Apple is also working on a combination Bluetooth and WiFi chip to replace the Broadcom chip they outsource for those duties.
Apple signed a 3.5 year deal in 2020 with Broadcom for wireless components, which is set to expire midway through 2023.
Apple was forced to settle its lawsuit with Qualcomm in 2017 and has been forced to continue depending on them.
However, the Cupertino company purchased Intel’s modem chip business in 2019 to get a head start on chip development, Bloomberg.
If there are no development troubles, Apple could successfully phase out Qualcomm entirely.
Pandemic✖️: 'People aren't taking this seriously': experts say US Covid surge is big risk.
In the 4th year of the this godforsaken virus, Covid-19 is once again making the rounds globally due to the recent holiday season, less testing and almost no restrictions.
According to The Guardian, "it's much lower than the peak in January 2022, but similar to the summer 2022 surge, which was the second biggest."
"The majority of people who aren't masking today, just don't know that they should"
The Omicron subvariants BQ1.1 and BQ.1 plus the quickly expanding XBB 1.5 make up majority of the cases, according to CDC estimates.
In the US north-east, more than 80% of cases are meant to from XBB 1.5 as "exposure is really risky, riskier now than it's ever been in terms of transmissibility."
