Quick Bites:
Living 🏡 : House prices have risen by 11% this year despite a cost of living crisis.
The average price of a home rose by £272,000 in July. This is the 12th consecutive monthly rise, according to Nationwide Building Society.
So much for Brexit making housing more affordable then 🙈
According to The Guardian, "the limited stock of homes on the market has helped keep upward pressure on house prices."
Furthermore, the "race for space" amid the shift to working from home has been another key reason.
What the "corporate" world doesn't understand- for young adults, their profession is more than their monthly paycheck. It's about purpose, flexibility and mobility.
The pandemic has not only made working from home the 'new normal' but it has also boosted the remote work paycheck.
The truth is- you can make a lot of money working from your home.
Key Highlights, according to The Guardian:
💡Cash transactions are at 35%; this indicates an ageing population in which more people own their homes outright
💡Properties bought for investment (such as holiday homes) have been a strong part of this
💡Demand will continue to stay strong as more people continue to view property as a hedge against inflation
💡According to the property website Rightmove, rents are at record levels. Average rent outside London hit another new record of £1,126 a month in the 2nd quarter.
Our Thoughts💡: Personally, crypto going up while house prices going down is the world we wanna live in
Sports ⛳️ : Tiger Woods is officially a billionaire, according to Forbes.
Despite ongoing lawsuits and settlements, Woods remains to be one of the highest-paid athletes in the world.
Key Highlights, according to Sports Insider:
💡Tiger Woods has made over $1.4bn since turning pro in 1996. More than $122mn of that came from on-course winnings
💡Woods is #1 on the all-time money list, by far
💡Woods won $4.6mn at the Tour Championship alone- one of his biggest paydays ever in golf
💡But the real money comes from off the course. In 2020, Woods made $60mn in endorsements. At his peak in the late 2000s, he raked in $100mn annually.
💡This led to a larger-than-life lifestyle. Woods owns a 10-acre property in Jupiter, Florida, which was built from scratch just for him for $55mn.
💡He also owns a 155-foot megayacht called ‘Privacy’ that now docks on North Palm Beach
However, it hasn’t been all been a smooth ride for the golf pro. In 2009, after Woods was accused of infidelity and got slammed with lawsuits, many of his endorsement partners dropped him over the scandal, including AT&T, Gatorade, Gilette and Tag Heuer.
However, his biggest partner, Nike, stood by him. So did his caddie, Joe LaCava
Despite a divorce settlement that cost him $100mn, a life-threatening car accident and a DUI arrest, Tiger Woods has maintained his supremacy in the sports world.
According to Forbes, Woods is one of just three known athlete billionaires, based on lifetime earnings.
The others are NBA champion-LeBron James and Michael Jordan, who hit ten digits after he retired, thanks to a well-timed investment in the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets.
Entertainment 📺 : Netflix has never run ads- until now.
With the streaming wars heating up from tech giants like Amazon, Apple and Disney+, Netflix hopes to offset subscriber losses by offering a cheaper ad-supported tier next year.
Key Highlights:
💡It lost almost a million subscribers between April and July as more people decided to cancel their subscription
💡Netflix has now lost users for 2 straight quarters in a row
💡Had it not been for Stranger Things, the drop would have been a lot worse.
💡Reed Hastings himself credits the hit TV show as "the single thing" that controlled the exodus from the streaming platform
At a time when companies compete to take on the trillion dollar entertainment ecosystem, this is Reed Hastings' novel attempt to increase revenue.
And with yet over 200 million subscribers, Netflix is in prime condition to run ads as "advertisers are thirsty for more ways to reach people", according to The Information.
Culture 👧 : "Serious looking" professional photos have been the standard of job hunting for decades.
The headshot is known to speak volumes about you and your work ethic. Candidates put on a smile, wear a suit and pose professionally behind a plain, boring background.
However, in 2022, authenticity has become the gold standard for employability.
Tattoos, piercings, yellow-dyed hair- its all about being open-minded and being accepted for who you are.
Infact, a forced smile might even come across as more disingenuous as a double nose piercing in today's age.
A recent example of a big company and also the 1st airline to do this is Virgin Atlantic.
Virgin officially lifted its ban on cabin crew having visible tattoos, The Guardian reports.
Shout out to Virgin for understanding that ink has NOTHING to do with professionalism!🙌🏻
Until now, Virgin- like other carriers- would only hire staff that were able to hide tattoos under their uniform.
The airline said that the new rules were “in line with our focus on inclusion and championing individuality.”
Virgin has also got rid of its rule that female air hostesses must wear make-up in 2019 and could choose to wear trousers instead of a skirt, which was previously mandatory, The Guardian.
Our Thoughts💡: Virgin being the first prominent flight crew to show off their tattoos? A step towards less physical appearance stigma AND more body art please!
