This Week in Review☕️: Research suggests we need a 9 day holiday every year | China wants its people to be more patriotic | TikTok influencers ignite the Sample Sale craze | Golden Globe Awards sweep
Quick Bites:
Travel ✈️ : When is a holiday enough?
Research suggests we need at least one nine-day break every year.
Personally.. we're in desperate need of a 6-month vacation twice a year 🙄
PS. A holiday is ONLY enough when we have no phone, no kids, a 5-star buffet and unlimited spicy margaritas🍹.. and preferably with Johnny Depp as our butler 😈
For those with limited paid time off, a holiday planned in advance can go a long way, according to WSJ, noting that 15 days of time off can turn "into nearly 50 days of extended break time."
A major holiday hack💡: Ask for a day off after a public holiday to enjoy a four-day long weekend. And take off Monday instead of Friday. Getting back to the office on a Tuesday isn't as hectic than trying to finish a busy week.
About 50% of US workers with paid time off don't use all of it and around 20% of US private-sector workers have no PTO, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Our boss💡: We offer 2 weeks vacation but we ask that you not take off Mondays, Fridays, month end, month beginning or any day when another employee takes a day off 🤯
Our Thoughts💡:
Us realizing Christmas and NYE will happen on weekends this year👇🏻
Retail 🛍️ : TikTok reignites the sample sale craze, Business of Fashion reports.
Sample sales have gone viral with, social media influencers sharing their product hauls as well as what to expect from wait lines, pricing and restocks.
Great day at the Sephora sample sale today! Put 3 girls in the hospital, curb stomped an old lady and murdered a white male, but we love our new liquid highlighter! 🥰
PS. Guys, if you're really going to a sample sale, be a decent human being and turn your phone horizontal before you record fights 🙏🏻
Instead of just getting rid of unsold inventory, sample sales are becoming a more strategic part of brand marketing.
Brands are also taking a more personalized, experiential approach to these sales, staging them more like a party with food and beverages to connect with shoppers, Business of Fashion reports.
Our Thoughts💡: Just survived our first sample sale stampede.
We came, we saw, we conquered.. our credit card limit 💰
Food 🌱 : How many of you are doing Veganuary right now? Veganuary is a month-long pledge to go vegan in January and hopefully the rest of the year.
@MeatEaters that claim to hate vegans so much, why not just ignore us like you do climate change, deforestation and animal abuse? 🤔
Before we go ahead, we just wanna say- we're setting up an in inbox-filter sending anything about Dry January or Veganuary to the trash.
It's not the events we have an issue with personally, it's just the RELENTLESS marketing around them. We're talking +40 f**king emails per day!🤬🤬
Like GIVE IT A REST. WE LOVE MEAT 🥩 . AND CHEESE 🧀. AND WINE 🍷.
Tbh, the "smart" advice for us to give would be to live your life in a way that you don't need to reset with:
💡30 Day Challenges
💡Dry January
💡Veganuary
💡Juice cleanses
💡Gym subscriptions
Live in that sweet spot between ALL and NOTHING and enjoy in moderation all year round, right guys?
Our Thoughts💡: The good news is that- apparently, you can beat inflation via Veganuary AND Dry January. Here's how:
💡Eat lentils instead of meat
💡Don't buy in bulk
💡Make almond milk at home
💡Drink OJ instead of wine
💡NOBODY SAID THIS WOULD BE FUN
Drinking🍺: Gen Z that want the high but not the hangover are fueling a non-alcohlic spirits boom, Bloomberg reports.
Can't get a hangover if you never sober up folks 😎
Sales of non-alcoholic drinks are expected to grow at 5 times the rate of conventional ones.
From booze-free brews to adaptogenic zero-proof cocktails, there is a rapidly growing "sober-curious" trend among the upcoming generation.
According to Axios, On TikTok, the hashtag #mocktails has over 1 billion views on TikTok.
The sector is expected to grow to $30 billion in 2025, according to Global Market Insights.
In addition, the rise of health and wellness has led to a decreased interest in alcohol- even for people who aren't sober.
In fact, an overwhelming 86% of Gen-Z consumers believe that their mental health is as significant as their physical health when considering drinking alcohol, Axios reports.
Sports ⛳️ : Tiger Woods and Nike part after 27 years together.
Woods signed multiple deals with Nike; the most recent a 10-year extension in 2013 worth about $200 million, per The Oregonian.
Nike has said “It was a hell of a run”.
Nike letting Woods go reminds us of Roger Federer in 2018 when Federer passed on a $10 million annual sponsorship deal with Nike.
Instead, he created shockwaves when he signed a $300 million deal with Uniqlo for 10 years.. aka 3 times more than the $10mn Nike was paying him every year 🙌🏻
Tiger Woods/ reported deals:
💡1996: 5 year/ $40 million (also his 1st deal, after he turned pro at the age of 20)
💡2001: 5 year/ $100 million
💡2006: 8 year/ $160 million
💡2013: 10 year/ $200 million
One of the most iconic and lucrative brand partnerships in sports history 👏
The news comes after Nike announced last month that it was cutting $2 billion in costs, a move that would include axing the golf division and laying off hundreds of employees.
Politics 🇨🇳 : China feels the country isn't patriotic enough. A new law aims to change that.
The new “Patriotic Education Law,” aimed at “enhancing national unity,” mandates that love of the country and the ruling Chinese Communist Party be incorporated into work and study for everyone- from the youngest children to workers and professionals across all sectors, CNN reports.
Speaking of China.. Our local Mexican restaurant used to be a Chinese restaurant. Instead of painting over a mural, they put sombreros on the pandas..
Work smarter, Not harder 😎
The push for love of the Communist Party is nothing new in the East, where Chinese propaganda has been an integral part of people's day to day life.
Chinese nationalism has thrived under Xi Jinping, the country’s most authoritarian leader in decades.
Xi has publicly pledged to “rejuvenate” China to a place of power globally and encouraged a “wolf warrior” diplomacy amid rising tensions with the West, CNN reports.
