Tigers & Tech CEOs 🐅
This Week in Review ☕️ : Big Tech faces turbulent times with CEOs warning low-performing employees | Instagram responds back to backlash | Sustainable Fashion comes under scrutiny | Tigers are back |
Quick Bites:
Social Media 📲 : Instagram is rolling back its recent changes of trying to copy TikTok after swift user backlash.
“We definitely need to take a big step back and regroup”
-Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri
No sh*t! Since the "new update" really understood what users wanted🙄:
💡None of our friends photos
💡Reposted TikTok videos from accounts we don't follow
💡Unsolicited memes from accounts we don't follow
💡10 second ads before every 15 second video
💡Everything played at full volume against our will !
Kim Kardashian (aka the matriarch of the real first family of America) shared a "Make Instagram Instagram Again" meme on the platform, critical of the changes.
Kylie Jenner- the most followed woman on the app, joined Kim in the protest.
Our Thoughts💡: We see a big lesson here. If you have the right influencers on board (the ones who can really flex on an elite level), you can turn certain moves by big companies into a PR nightmare!!
IT WORKS💯
Speaking of.. : Meta sees 1st-ever drop in revenue.
Q2 results missed earnings targets as Meta lost $2.8bn on its Virtual Reality ambitions during the quarter.
The Q3 forecast additionally looked bleak.
The company's Q1 was also weak; Daily active users fell for the 1st time in its 18-year history.
It was reported that Instagram and WhatsApp are growing- but not by much. The company just added 10mn users across all of its apps in the last quarter
Personally, we're thrilled. Any tech firm that helped Donald Trump get elected needs to crash.
A bad day for FB is a GREAT day for democracy!🙌🏻
Internally, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is said to be "setting a relentless pace," as per The New York Times
💡Zuckerberg is going off at staff; warning low-performing employees their days are numbered, per NYT, The Verge and Insider.
💡Big tech companies are in the midst of an "unprecedented stress test" this week, per Forbes
💡Alphabet and Microsoft results also showed a slowdown
Our Thoughts💡: 5 compelling reasons why Facebook and MetaVerse Mark are in the pits:
1. Noone
2. Gives
3. A
4. F**king
5. Shit
Sustainability 🧦 : Global companies like ASOS, Boohoo and Asda are being investigated for misleading green claims.
Authorities are probing products' sustainability in an attempt to tackle "greenwashing"
The concerns are particularly around the "broad or vague" language that implies sustainability.
“People who want to ‘buy green’ should be confident that they aren’t being misled. Eco-friendly and sustainable products can play a role in tackling climate change, but only if they are genuine”
-The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)
Regulators are not just looking at the fashion sector but also the food industry.
💡Oatly, leading oat-milk brand backed by celebrity investors like Oprah and Jay-Z, had a marketing campaign banned by the UK Advertising Authority (ASA) earlier this year.
According to regulators, Oatly "overstated" emissions made by the dairy sector.
Other examples include:
💡Tesco's burger ads getting banned recently for "misleading" claims that it's plant-based burger could help people "do their bit" for the environment
💡A Sainsbury ad that became controversial when it suggested switching meat for lentils and chickpeas was better for the planet
Our Thoughts💡: The banned campaigns are a harsh reminder that ethics and transparency matter, even for cult-favorite consumer brands like ASOS and Oatly!
Clearly, there's more to success than slick marketing and holier-than-thou packaging!
Wildlife 🐯 : Nepal has tripled its tiger population in the past decade.
Nepal's National Tiger Survey 2022 found there are now 355 wild tigers in the country, a 190% increase since 2009.
The tedious survey covered over 12% of the country and required 16,811 days of field staff time, CNN reports.
The World Wildlife Fund has stated 2 main reasons for Tiger extinction:
💡Poaching for the illegal animal trade
💡Loss of habitat
Nepal is one of the few countries to make a conscious effort to preserve wildlife and "really does stand out as a leader in conservation, especially for tigers."
The most important way to protect tigers is "political will and political leadership", according to the World Wildlife Fund.
There are around 3,900 tigers in the wild and the species is considered endangered.
